Roundtable Participants Discuss Implementation of Citizens’ Budget in Sumy

A roundtable discussion on the topic Citizens’ Budget Platform in the City of Sumy was held in Sumy on July 5. The event was attended by representatives of the Sumy City Council, Citizens’ Budget Implementation Coordinating Board, action groups, the general public, and mass media.

As part of the roundtable, experts of the Nova Energia NGO presented to the participants the Citizens’ Budget electronic platform, which would enable the city residents to take part in a competition of citizens’ projects. They also introduced the roundtable participants to the tools and methods of engaging the public at all phases of citizens’ budget implementation.

The event opened with welcoming remarks from the Mayor Oleksandr Lysenko. The NOVA Energia NGO Chairman Vitalii Fylenko spoke about the information support and educational activities on project development to be held in the city.

A NOVA Energia NGO expert Serhii Omelichkin explained about the implementation of the Citizens’ Project Citizens’ Project electronic platform. The Coordinating Board Co-Chair Larysa Skyrtach spoke about updating the Regulation of the Sumy City Citizens’ Budget and the organizing team in the City Council in charge of project submission.

The event was organized by the NOVA Energia NGO with support from the Sumy City Council.

The roundtable was held as part of the Municipal Finance Strengthening Initiative (MFSI-II) Roll-out Project with regard to assisting in implementation of participatory budgeting in Ukrainian cities as part of the component Strengthening the practices of citizens’ participation in the budget process at the local level in Ukraine, which  is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Institute for Budgetary and Socio-Economic Research (IBSER). The Citizens’ Project electronic system was developed by the SocialBoost NGO.
